The One Codex Blog

Sequencing viral genomes from mixed microbial community samples is challenging due to the relatively low quantity of viral reads compared to host and/or background. One Codex and Twist Bioscience have co-developed targeted enrichment-based sequencing and analysis kits for recovery of whole viral genomes from high-background samples¹. This semi-targeted approach enables enrichment of known viruses while still capturing novel viruses.

The Twist Viral Research panels bundled with One Codex analysis are available in two versions. The Twist Respiratory Viral Research panel covers 29 human and respiratory viral pathogens. The larger Twist Comprehensive Viral Research Panel covers 3,153 viral pathogens known to infect both humans and animals². Both versions have been applied across public health, medicine, academia and industry in diverse use cases, such as evaluating wastewater viromes³, characterization of emerging pathogens⁴, discerning the infectious agent in an outbreak⁵, evaluating co-infections⁶, and novel strain detection^{6, 7}.

We are excited to announce that One Codex is launching a new partnership with 4bases! 4bases is a Swiss based company with an aim to address unmet medical needs in precision medicine, with clinically-validated and cost-effective solutions for healthcare professionals. One Codex’s mission to enable translational applications of metagenomics and microbiome science strongly aligns with this aim. Notably, this partnership expands One Codex’s reach to European researchers and clinicians.

We are thrilled to announce the largest update to our database to date, which now encompasses over 148,000 high-quality reference genomes spanning the entire taxonomic tree. The benefits of increasing the taxonomic breadth of our classifier are multiplied when combined with analytical workflows for microbiome discovery, clinical metagenomics, and genomic epidemiology.

We are happy to announce that One Codex now supports importing data from the Sequence Read Archive (SRA), allowing for quick comparison and analysis of publicly available sequencing data and associated metadata.

Today we’re pleased to announce the latest update and expansion to the One Codex Database! This update includes the most recent revision of the NCBI taxonomy, improves characterization of complex microbial communities, and increases coverage of species present in the mouse gut microbiome. This release marks our most comprehensive database yet, cataloging over 127,000 genomes across more than 80,000 species.
